On its surface Mack Gordon’s new play Shake The Sheets! plays out like a mystery as a husband and wife find themselves trapped in the worlds of her nightmares and his words. The two fight to remain together.
For all of the beautiful and evocative language that Gordon has created though, that vividly sets the stage of the worlds they travel, it is the love story that rings through. “I’ll believe in you if you believe in me”, says the husband (Gordon) at one point to his wife (Kaitlin Williams), putting into focus our human need for connection and finding the heart of the story.
With a different unrehearsed Fringe celebrity taking to the stage each night as the interloper in their worlds, there is an added tension within the surreal that comes from not knowing how it might play out; just like real life.
Helping to underscore Gordon’s words is a beautiful original soundscape and music from Jordan Klassen.
Those that love words will geek out on Gordon’s script, while the romantics in the audience will appreciate its love story. For those that fall into both camps, it makes for a compelling piece of theatre.
