Nancy Kenny’s Roller Derby Saved My Soul is one of those rare solo Fringe shows that you wish didn’t have to end so soon.

Having lived in the shadow of her bigger little sister for most of her life, Amy has struggled to find her place in the world.  It isn’t until she discovers the pleasures of the roller derby and that of Diana, one of its Amazonian players that she not only breaks free of the spectre of sister, she also manages to break her sister’s fingers.

The transformation of Amy from introverted nerd lost in a world of Buffy and Xena to roller derby queen is not only heartwarming, it is a rallying cry for the countless wallflowers to stand-up and take a chance.  Kenny is not only a superb storyteller, but she actually skates too.  It is the most fun you’re going to have on eight wheels at this year’s Fringe.

Roller Derby Saved My Soul written and performed by Nancy Kenny.  Playing at the False Creek Community Centre (1318 Cartwright St, Granville Island) as part of the 2014 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Visit http://vancouverfringe.com for tickets and showtimes.
