The Old Woman
The Old Woman

You will immediately know John Grady is a dancer in The Old Woman. He has a grace about his movements that are light and fluid. That he eventually goes full-on dance isn’t the surprising thing about this one-man show though. It is Grady’s ability to paint vivid pictures with words that is most unexpected.

A former member of Ballet BC, Grady’s main focus in on telling the story of living in Los Angeles,  taking care of his mother who he and his large number siblings share responsibility.  Now in a nursing home, his mother is quickly being consumed by dementia. Mixed with his stories of his mother’s decline, Grady questions how solid his own mind might be now and in the future. There is a story of a rattler in a park that at first seems far removed from dementia, but it is told with great skill.

And then he dances.

The Old Woman doesn’t break new ground, but there is a sweetness to Grady’s story about aging that is endearing.
