2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick: A Dirk Darrow Investigation has got it all: bad puns, sexual innuendo, mentalism and magic. What makes it even more enjoyable is it comes wrapped inside a fun mystery narrative.
Early reviews of Tim Motley’s show at this year’s Vancouver Fringe were, to be polite, mixed. It appears Motley has finally got his shit together. The result is an engaging 60 minute mix of film noir parody and magic tricks that really does live up to the hype it received elsewhere. My only complaint is that while Motley has the film noir detective “patter” down perfectly, his delivery is often so fast it is difficult to keep up.
Where the previous show that same night didn’t always work because of the audience participation, here Motley makes it work. When things don’t go according to plan, like a good comedian dealing with a heckler, Motley skillfully makes it part of the show. His card trick at the end worked flawlessly, and while you know it is a “trick” you’ll be cheering in the end when he (hopefully) nails it.
Go. Groan at the one-liners. As Dick Darrow says, it only makes him stronger.
