Tucked neatly inside the playbill for the Electric Company Theatre production of Great Day For Up is a two page note from playwright and performer, Jonathan Young. It does little to illuminate what this show is about.
First presented by Young as his Studio 58 graduation project twenty years ago, Great Day For Up is an enigma. If I am reading Young’s notes on the play correctly it is has something to do with with the perception of things, common things, that have yet to be given substance by a name. There is a childlike ideal here that points to the source of the play’s title, a children’s book by Ted Geisel.
Young has always struck me as a generous performer. Great Day For Up though comes across as a little self-indulgent. For the average theatre-goer it seems more an exercise for actor than audience.
Final performance on Monday, September 12 at 6:45pm. Visit http://vancouverfringe.com for tickets and information.
