Do you hear voices in your head? In Not Enough, Megan Phillips’ voices are replayed relentlessly on a loop for everyone to hear. It didn’t take long for it to become irritating. And while that might be part of Phillips’ point, it created a chasm that was insurmountable.
Her real-life story of going on a 10-day meditation retreat to help her quell her inner voices, those that have sought similar respite may connect (and indeed some audience members last night evidently could relate). For the rest of us, there is a nagging urge to dismiss.
With mental health such a delicate and personal subject though, is it possible to be dismissive and compassionate? Absolutely. One can feel for Phillips’ struggles, but as a piece of theatre it was just way too much.
