Fake Ghost Tours was a spooktacularly silly start to this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival.
In this very funny walking tour, ghost hunters Abdul Aziz and Shawn O’Hara take us on quick 45-minute jaunt, announcing every location we stop at as “one of the most haunted sites on Granville Island”.
From the children’s water park where the duo claim Captain George Vancouver and his crew met their demise by voracious seals, to the giant Ocean Concrete silos in which they claim literally contain the bones of giants, the stories are as silly as they are funny. There are local references aplenty, and even a stop at Emily Carr’s tomb.
Mostly scripted, the two also riff off each other with skill. At one point our group walked through a haze of pot smoke only to be told we had just passed through the ghost of a stoner.
Aziz and O’Hara never take themselves seriously, and combined with their likability, makes this duo simultaneously funny, smart, and charming. With full marks for originality, this is a fresh and welcome respite from the typical Fringe show.
Don’t let the predicted rain over the next few days of the Fringe deter you as this is one show you will definitely not want to miss.
