In 1924, in the Kowloon district of Hong Kong, a series of sadistic murders have stymied the local police. What to do but bring in the city’s top detective, and set him loose on a place riddled with corruption, crime, and vice of every possible variety. As Detective Tommy Lam says, “In Kowloon, you can’t tell the police from the criminals.”
Jovanni Sy’s mesmerizing thriller Nine Dragons pays tribute to film noir conventions – a savage crime, a mysterious nightclub, and a tough-talking detective – and invests these tropes with intelligence, insight, and a unique cultural perspective.
In Hong Kong, the British occupation is deeply entrenched, and Detective Lam is fighting not only to find the murderer, but also to prove his worth to his colonial supervisors. Meanwhile, the lead suspect in the case, one Victor Fung, recruits Tommy to help clear his name. As Detective Lam searches for clues, spiralling ever-deeper into the seedy and sinister reaches of the city’s infamous neighbourhood, deception and double-crosses pervade the action, with an opium cloud of perversion and decadence.
Nine Dragons offers a compelling immersion in a complex time and place that has surprising contemporary relevance. Taking inspiration from classic murder mysteries and hard-boiled detective stories, Jovanni Sy uses the genre form to craft an incisive look at cultural oppression, race and prejudice.
“In writing Nine Dragons, I wanted to dramatize the choice that most marginalized people face: assimilate, often through erasing essential aspects of oneself, or be relegated to secondary status. Of course, there is a third way, redefine the rules.”
