Metro Theatre invites you to the edge of your seat with its production of Agatha Christie’s most celebrated and chilling mystery, And Then There Were None. Directed by the accomplished Don Briard, this gripping tale of suspense and intrigue promises to captivate audiences from start to unexpected finish.
Following last season’s major success with The Mousetrap, Metro Theatre brings another Christie classic to life. Ten strangers summoned to a remote island under mysterious pretenses are trapped as an ominous storm cuts them off from the mainland. With no way out and one by one marked for murder, their darkest secrets unravel, and the tension escalates to an unforgettable climax.
Director Don Briard shares the unique challenges of presenting such an iconic piece: “As a director my goal is always to create “the illusion of the first time”—to foster in the audience acceptance of the belief that these words have never been spoken by anyone before; that they have been transported into a world that exists in another place and time. It is a challenge for the actors but when achieved it gives the audience a memorable experience and makes the play’s ending a surprise no matter how many times they have seen the story unfold. If we can achieve that we will have met our goal.”
He continued, “those who attend Metro’s production of And Then There Were None confident that they know the outcome of the story may be in for a surprise. In 2015 Agatha Christie’s estate commissioned an alternative ending for the play. It would certainly be a “spoiler” to give it away, so all I will say is that you may not see the ending you expect.”
As one of Christie’s darkest and most sophisticated works, And Then There Were None transcends its time, blending psychological depth with unrelenting suspense. Its universal themes of guilt, justice, and morality resonate as powerfully today as when the play first debuted
in 1943.
