Applause! Musicals In Concert presents its 50th musical since 1997 – Do I Hear A Waltz? featuring the music of a revered master – Richard Rodgers, the sharp-witted lyrics of a genius coming into his own – Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It’s a rare chance to see/hear this mostly shelved, forgotten & rare musical, a unique collaboration of these three titans of the musical theatre genre.

The touching, bittersweet musical Do I Hear A Waltz? centers around a young tourist with romantic notions of love waiting to be discovered. She uses her meagre savings for a long-dreamed-of trip and decides to travel alone to the city of gondolas, the Grand Canal, the Piazza San Marco, and the Rialto Bridge. Under the magical spell of mid-1960s Venice, she falls for a charming Italian shopkeeper and learns that, even in the most romantic of settings, love comes with a price.

Do I Hear A Waltz? marks the 50th musical in concert for APPLAUSE! Musicals Society, which started in 1997. Their unique approach to presenting musicals involves just one week of rehearsals, followed by an “in-concert” performance of the entire script and score, with actors holding scripts and minimal staging & lighting to enhance the storytelling. APPLAUSE! remains the sole company in Canada dedicated to reviving rare, shelved, and forgotten musicals by beloved musical theatre composers.
