Godspell, presented by Play on Words Productions and Canadian Memorial United Church, will open on November 14th at the heritage building on the corner of 15th and Burrard, with a short run closing on November 17th.
In this interpretation of Stephen Schwartz’s hit musical, Jesus, Judas and John the Baptist come together with a group of their peers to plan and execute a drag queen story hour. They share parables from the Book of Matthew, celebrating unity, community and inclusivity. From the composer of Wicked and Pippin, with an energetic pop/rock score including the international hit “Day By Day”, Godspell is certain to entertain and inspire all who experience its message of acceptance, hope and ‘love is love’.
“When Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak created Godspell in 1971, audiences were divided,” says director Ryan Nuñez. “Many struggled to grasp the blend of Rock and Roll and how it seemed to sidestep the religious themes of resurrection and atonement. Fast forward to 2024, and audiences still find themselves intrigued by this piece. By incorporating elements of Drag and the Queer community, I aim to elevate it further, demonstrating that love and community transcend all backgrounds.”
