The Jessie awards recognize excellence in three groups: large and small theatre, plus theatre for young audiences.

Returning to its theatrical roots, the 36th Annual Jessie Richardson Award Ceremony, celebrating excellence in the theatre community moves to Bard on the Beach in Vanier Park this year. The Jessies began in 1983 and takes its name from Jessie Richardson, one of Vancouver’s theatre pioneers.  The awards acknowledge bodies of work in the Large Theatre, Small Theatre and Theatre for Young Audiences, all whose work has contributed to make Vancouver a vibrant city.

Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival launches its 29th season with a lineup of four play productions and a range of special events. The Festival opens on the BMO Mainstage with a classical production of Macbeth. Macbeth plays in repertory with the romantic comedy As You Like It, set in Vancouver in the ‘60s, with over 20 classic Beatles songs performed by the cast. The acclaimed musical Once opens at the Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage next month. Adapted from the film written by John Carney, Once won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.
