Event Details

rice & beans theatre is proud to bring the Polyphonic Multilingual Creation Residency Showcase on May 30, 2024, featuring excerpts of multilingual works by Carolyn Nakagawa (Vancouver) and Yulissa Campos (Saskatoon).

For the second iteration of the annual multilingual residency (the first of its kind in Western Canada), the Showcase is the culmination of Nakagawa and Campos’ 10 days of development, where they will receive dramaturgical and collaborator support on their respective projects, Anne’s Cradle, an adaptation of the biography of Hanako Muraoka, the first person to translate Anne of Green Gables into Japanese, and I Frida, a one-woman bilingual play that explores the pressures that living in exile can put on a family.

“What an amazing opportunity for us to host the Polyphonic Multilingual Creation Residency. Programs like this are hard to come by, and we could not be more proud to host another iteration this year. After the huge success of last year, we were excited to see what new artists and projects made their way into our inboxes when the call went out again. With an enthusiastic response of applications, we were able to choose I, Frida and Anne’s Cradle. These are two projects not to be missed not only for their cultural significance to Canadians and immigrants alike, but for how wonderful it will be to see these projects in such a raw stage of development. Polyphonic is an incredible chance for these multilingual artists to work in pressure -ree environments and receive feedback from an audience made up of their communities,” rice and beans theatre’s Artistic Director Pedro Chamale says.
