David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars is nasty

What a nasty place Hollywood is.

David Cronenberg directs insider Bruce Wagner’s look at the petty and self-obsessed citizens of Hollywood. Burn victim and emotionally damaged Agatha returns to get close to her movie star and spoiled addicted brother. She achieves that by becoming a personal assistant to fading star Havana. Her fake self-help guru father and her image-obsessed mother don’t want her around. Only a kind chauffeur offers real kindness.

Julianne Moore and John Cusack are having fun, but the characters are not cruel enough to admire. The film is not funny enough to be satire, not scary enough to be thrilling. It’s just nasty.
