Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival

While the big draw for the annual Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival at Vanier Park is the Shakespeare, the festival also plays host to a whole slew of special events over the summer. Here are five special events worth considering.

1Bard-B-Q & Fireworks

Combining Shakespeare with the Celebration of Lights, Bard-B-Q & Fireworks (July 29, Aug 2 &5) evenings include either performances of Much Ado About Nothing or The Two Gentlemen of Verona, plus a salmon barbecue, entertainment and a private view of the fireworks.

2Operas & Arias: The Barber of Seville

UBC Opera Ensemble and accompanied by Vancouver Opera Orchestra perform one of the world’s most popular operas, Rossini’s masterpiece, The Barber of Seville (Aug 28 & Sep 4).

3Family Nights

It’s never too early to introduce the young ones to Shakespeare. Family-friendly activities before Much Ado About Nothing, a food truck and a pre-show talk designed just for the kids are all part of Family Night (Aug 7 & 22).

4Wine Wednesdays

What could be better than Shakespeare under a tent with a gorgeous view? Wine Wednesdays (Aug 9 & 23, Sep 6) are designed as intimate pre-show wine tastings from a selection of winemakers and wineries before the show.

5Exploring Shakespeare

With each show in a season, Simon Fraser University’s Paul Budra digs deep into the text in Exploring Shakespeare (Aug 12). The final talk in the series deals with The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival continues at Vancouver’s Vanier Park until September 23. Visit for more information.
