Diego El Cigala makes his Vancouver debut later this month.

One of Spain’s most electrifying and innovative flamenco singers, Diego El Cigala, makes his Vancouver debut at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. In this week’s #FridayFive, we give you five reasons to take in his concert:

1. El Cigala is a three-time Latin GRAMMY Award-winner who has performed for hundreds of thousands of flamenco fans around the globe since his career began in 1997, yet this is his very first performance ever in Vancouver.

2. Over the span of his career, El Cigala has collaborated such legendary musicians as Argentinean folk singer Mercedes Sosa; Cuban pianist Bébo Valdes, and master bandoneonist Néstor Marconi. In addition, he has worked with master innovators such as jazz trumpeter/percussionist Jerry Gonzaléz and Spanish guitarist Diego Garcia “El Twanguero” to name but a few.

3. This performance will radically challenge pre-conceived notions of a flamenco concert by offering a fresh perspective on the form through the melding of other Latin genres – in this case fiery, Argentinean tango.

4. El Cigala will be joined on-stage by a powerhouse band that includes pianist Jaime Calabuch, guitarists Diego Moreno and Dan Ben Lior, double bassist Yelsy Heredia, and percussionist Isidro Suárez.

5. El Cigala has been touted as the “Sinatra of flamenco” – which is enough to make anyone curious!

Diego El Cigala plays the Chan Shun Concert Hall at The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 25.  Visit http://chancentre.com for tickets and information.
