"I still can't believe I was invited on this trip of a lifetime. You'll have everything you need for a magical musical journey on The Polar Express in Concert." - composer Alan Silvestri.

Is it too early to start talking about the holidays? With shorter days, colder nights, and snow already falling in some parts of our province, you would have thought winter had already arrived.

To help get us into the spirit of the season, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) has announced the latest in its string of cinematic concerts with the world premiere of The Polar Express In Concert.

“It is a classic story, a groundbreaking film, and we are thrilled that Vancouver audiences will be the first to see the film with a live symphony experience,” says Neil Middleton, the vice-president of marketing & sales for the VSO in a media release.

The Polar Express will feature the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performing the score from two-time Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Alan Silvestri, and the original songs co-written with Glen Ballard. As the symphony performs, the film will play above them on a 40-foot HD screen.

“This was a joyful enterprise for Alan and me,” says Ballard in the release. “Seeing the film with a live orchestra will be an incredible way to experience this wonderful story. We are so proud to share this experience.”

Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book, the 2014 ground-breaking animated film was directed by Robert Zemeckis and starred Oscar-winner Tom Hanks. The first-ever all-digital capture film to be released, it tells the story of a young boy who, on Christmas Eve, sees a mysterious train bound for the North Pole stop outside his window and is invited aboard by its conductor. The boy joins several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas.

Presented by CineConcerts in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, the concert will be under the baton of conductor Justin Freer. The co-founder and president of CineConcerts, Freer and his company are leaders in live film concert presentations, including the popular Harry Potter series.

The Polar Express In Concert plays at the Orpheum Theatre on November 19. Visit polarexpressinconcert.com for tickets and information.
