This year's VSO Summer Season features an eclectic mix of eight concerts

It’s the summer of music as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) revealed its line-up for its 2019 summer concert series.

The eclectic mix of performances, which runs through July, includes a return to Sunset Beach, its 32nd annual performance at Deer Lake, Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, plus live musical performances for two presentations on the big screen.

“It’s a summer season that celebrates all that is great here at home: the outdoor landscapes, popular film, and family-friendly programs,” says says Kelly Tweeddale, president of the VSO and VSO School of Music in a media release. “If there has ever been a great excuse for planning a stay-cation with the VSO, I think this is it.”

The summer season opens on June 24 with the VSO returning to the Bard on the Beach stage at Vanier Park with From Venice to Vienna, under the baton of Assistant Conductor Bill Rowson.

The next day, the VSO performs for the first time with Thorgy Thor, the star of season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race. A classically trained violinst, Thorgy’s appearance in Vancouver will coincide with the Vancouver Queer Arts Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

Next up is Broadway star and seven-time Tony Award-winner Bernadette Peters, who will perform with the VSO on June 27 at the Orpheum Theatre.

On June 30, the VSO and Music Director Otto Tausk return to Deer Lake for its 32nd annual summer performance. New this year, are family activities, entertainment fromthe VSO School of Music, as well as a pre-concert performance by members of the VSO Orchestral Institute.

The VSO Orchestral Institute, attracting young musicians from around the world, will perform in a public concert on July 3 at the Chan Centre featuring performances of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.

Back at the Orpheum on July 4 through July 6 the VSO will perform John Williams’ iconic score live while Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back plays on the big screen behind them. Then on July 7, Music Director Otto Tausk joins the VSO, in partnership with the Vancouver Park Board, for its second annual Symphony at Sunset concert at Sunset Beach.

The VSO Summer Season wraps on July 12 & 13 with the family classic Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II in which the “Wascally Wabbit” and friends return to the big screen with classic Looney Tunes, while the VSO plays the original scores live.
