With audiences still taking in the current offerings under the red and white tents at Vanier Park, Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival has revealed its 2018 line-up, including a production of As You Like It featuring the music of The Beatles.
Set in 1960s as the “free-spirits are escaping Vancouver to get back to the land”, the production will feature twenty classic Beatles’ songs from “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to “All You Need is Love”. This pastoral comedy is directed by Daryl Cloran, who helmed the company’s 2015 musical production of Love’s Labour’s Lost.
Sharing the BMO mainstage tent is Shakespeare’s epic Scottish drama, Macbeth. A powerful study of power and corruption, it has remained a favourite of Bard on the Beach audiences over the years.
On the Howard Family Stage is a production of Timon of Athens, directed by Meg Roe and starring Colleen Wheeler. Featuring a female-dominated cast, this exploration of power and greed is a parable for our times in a powerful indictment of capitalism and nihilism.
Timon of Athens will alternate each night with the Greek classic Lysistrata. Set in present day Vancouver, this new Bard-commissioned adaptation is a bawdy romp investigating how humour and art can take their place in the political arena. It is directed by Lois Anderson, whose 2016 Pericles for Bard won her a Jessie Award for outstanding direction.
Advance 2018 season pack tickets for go on sale today, offering discounts a discount on tickets for all four productions. Flex packs will go on sale in November, followed by single ticket sales in April 2018.
