Before The Curtain Goes Up: Spring Awakening

Renegade Arts Co presents Spring Awakening at The Shop Theatre from May 25 - June 10.

From the company that brought us Hair, The Who’s Tommy, and Rent in recent years comes the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening, a musical that follows a group of late nineteenth-century German students on their passage to adulthood.

Based on the 1891 German play of the same name, the musical stage adaptation by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater follows a group of late nineteenth-century German students on their passage to adulthood in an exploration of teenage self-discovery and coming-of-age anxiety.

Set to a pop-rock score, the story revolves around two young lovers, Melchior and Wendla, as they navigate the challenges of adolescence in a world where adults hold all the power.

In this edition of Before The Curtain Goes Up, Vancouver Presents contributor David C Jones speaks with members of the cast, Nicole Laurent (Wendla), Stephen Myers (Melchoir) and musical director Shawn Henry to find out more.

Renegade Arts Co presents Spring Awakening at The Shop Theatre (8877 Selkirk St, Vancouver) from May 25 – June 10. Visit renegadeproductions.net for tickets and information.
