Opening the season, Disney’s The Lion King returns to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (Jun 18-Jul 12). The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1998, the mega-musical was last seen in Vancouver in 2010 when it set records for the highest box office gross in Canadian theatrical history. Based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, to tell its story of love and redemption with its unique combination of live actors and puppets.
Next up is Once (Nov 17-22), the winner of eight Tony Awards in 2012 including for Best Musical. Featuring an ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, Once tells the tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs.
The 1987 hit film Dirty Dancing (Jan 12-17) gets its own musical treatment in this stage adaptation to tell story of Baby and Johnny, two independent young spirits from different worlds who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives.
Rounding out the season is the return of Mamma Mia! (Mar 29-Apr 3), the jukebox musical that combines the music of ABBA with the story of a young woman about to be married on a Greek island, who discovers that any one of three men invited could be her father.
