It is the summer of the musical in Vancouver with a trio of shows worth checking out

It is definitely shaping up to be the summer of the musical in Vancouver as there are not one, not two, but a trio of musicals that are deserving of your well earned entertainment dollar.

[dropcap]1[/dropcap]The effervescent Hairspray (until Aug 22) continues to play at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. This Theatre Under the Stars production is as good as anything currently on the professional stages around town right now, and while it is definitely a show with a message, it is all wrapped inside such an evening of fun that it is destined to be one big summer hit.

[dropcap]2[/dropcap]It may be a far cry from 1960s Baltimore to 19th century France, as Les Miserables (until Aug 16) continues at the Arts Club’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. Based on the epic Victor Hugo novel, this story of love and redemption is so crystal clear and filled with such a talented cast that it is simply as good as its gets.

[dropcap]3[/dropcap]The final pick in our trio of musicals is another Arts Club production. Playing over at their Granville Island Stage, Godspell (until Aug 1) has as an uplifting message that is invigorating. While it may be based on the gospel of Saint Matthew, this play is about love and community and very little to do with religion. A female Jesus? Absolutey!
