Presentation House Theatre opens its fall season with the English-language world premiere of Heavy and Light, an international co-production with Germany’s theatre wrede+ for children aged 3-7.
In this “playful exploration of opposites,” Heavy and Light follows He and She, an adventurous pair learning all about what it means to explore together. With themes surrounding imagination, transformation, compassion and understanding, this show touches on the science behind what makes one thing heavy and something else light and the emotions and meanings behind those words.
Affectionately referred to as “absurdist theatre for children” by director Kim Selody, the show explores how different personalities play together as He and She tell a story together but don’t always agree on how the story should be told. Through interactive play with rocks and balloons, the pair ventures on a journey to discover if a stone ever wonders what it’s like to fly or where balloons go if they fly away.
“It’s fun and it’s challenging,” says actor Victor Mariano. “What I love is that the work is never done. It’s scary, but it’s also really thrilling.”
Heavy and Light plays North Vancouver’s Presentation House from October 5-15. Visit phtheatre.org for tickets and information.
