In a media release, Vancouver’s professional French language theatre company Théâtre la Seizième announced a 2018-2019 season of four main stage shows that will take audiences off the beaten path.
“Going off the beaten path means stepping out of our comfort zone, momentarily leaving behind everything we know so well, in order to move towards something as yet unknown,” says artistic and managing director Esther Duquette.
Opening the season is Catherine Léger’s Baby-Sitter (Oct 9-13). Inspired by current events, including the #MeToo movement, the dark comedy asks the question: what are the limits to freedom of expression?
In a co-production with DanceHouse and SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs, Chotto Desh (Nov 21-24) blends text, dance, visuals, and sound in a tale of identity and cultural heritage. Bengali for “little homeland”, it is the story of a young man’s dreams and memories from Britain to Bangladesh.
In David Paquet’s comedy Le Soulier (Feb 27-Mar 9, 2019), eight-year old Benoit has a pain that won’t go away. A trip to the dentist reveals to his mother that her son’s problems are much larger than a simple toothache.
Closing out the Théâtre la Seizième main stage season is Ce qu’on attend de moi (May 21-25, 2019). In this unique show, each night a willing audience member becomes the only actor in that evening’s show exploring the question: are we creatures of free will, or prisoners of our social conditioning?
In addition to its quartet of main stage shows, which are all presented with English surtitles on select dates, Théâtre la Seizième will also present two shows for young audiences this season.
Touring secondary schools in April next year, Simon a toujours aimé danser delves into the importance of expressing one’s self and achieving one’s potential through our passions in life. For the younger set, the elementary school tour is a production of Élise contre l’extinction totale, exploring themes of friendship, teamwork, and respect for others.
