Theatre review: TripImproviser takes you on the road to funny

Where will your laughs take you? That’s the question being asked at the Vancouver TheatreSports League’s summer show, TripImproviser, now on stage at the Improv Centre on Granville Island through the end of August.

Taking its cues from TripAdvisor’s often unintentionally humorous reviews, this very interactive show takes audiences on a laughter-filled trip of their own design. But unlike many TheatreSports shows, there is no competitive element in TripImproviser which means the focus is strictly on the funny. And while TheatreSports shows have always included a lot of audience input, TripImproviser takes it to a whole other level as opening night host Michael Teigen roamed the audience as a facilitator instead of presiding over the stage as a judge.

As no two audiences are alike, the participation can make a huge difference at each performance. On this night the audience and sketches included a fluent Russian speaker, a Columbian critic and a math teacher from Regina. Who knows what humorous anecdotes and ideas are hiding in the performance that you’ll attend.  Since there are few of us without a vacation story to share the possibilities are seemingly endless.

And in case you needed any more incentive, TheatreSports is listed as #21 and Granville Island is #12 on TripAdvisor’s real list of attractions to see in Vancouver.

TripImproviser plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at the Improv Centre on Granville Island (1502 Duranleau St) through August 30. Visit https://www.vtsl.com for tickets and information.
