Have you ever wondered what it might like to be deaf? Vancouver’s Dark Table, the popular dining experience where patrons are served in darkness by blind or visually impaired servers, gives way to an immersive deaf experience in the upcoming Deaf Deaf World: Welcome to Handville Island.
Organized by students in the American Sign Language & Deaf studies program at Vancouver Community College and volunteers from the deaf community, this fundraiser will give you a complete immersion into the deaf world where complete silence is mandatory and the only communication is through American Sign Language.
Games, activities, a deaf school and museum filled with deaf artists and history are all part of the day. But be sure to avoid speaking because that just might land you in jail.
David C Jones finds out more in an interview with organizer Vincent Chauvet.
Deaf Deaf World: Welcome to Handville Island takes place at the Broadway campus of Vancouver Community College (1155 East Broadway) on May 3 from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Visit the group’s Facebook page for more information.
