Our picks this week: The Barber of Seville & Tuesdays With Morrie

Opera & Arias: The Barber of Seville

Bard on the Beach isn’t all about Shakespeare. In its annual Opera & Arias concert, the UBC Opera Ensemble and members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra brings Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (Aug 28) to the stage with a costumed concert staging featuring excerpts from this popular comic opera.

Tuesdays With Morrie

With hundreds of thousands of Chinese speakers in the Lower Mainland, Richmond’s Gateway Theatre reflects our multicultural make-up with its annual Gateway Theatre Pacific Festival. Featuring two plays from Hong Kong, first up is Tuesdays With Morrie (Aug 31-Sep 2). The stage adaptation of sportswriter Mitch Albom’s bittersweet bestselling novel, it recalls Albom’s weekly visits with his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz. Both shows are presented in Cantonese with English and simplified Chinese surtitles.
