ReACT: New Plays in Progress, Off Leash & Macbeth

This week the Arts Club celebrates and showcases new Canadian authors, a new musical focuses on our city’s near obsession with dogs, and a Shakespearean tragedy gets a contemporary makeover.

[dropcap]1[/dropcap]For fifteen years, the Arts Club Theatre Company’s ReACT: New Plays in Progress (Nov 2-8) has been showcasting new works by Canadian authors in a series of public readings and talkbacks. This year’s crop of playwrights include Jill Daum, Dorothy Dittrich, Anosh Irani, Alison Kelly, Stacey Kaser, and the Mom’s the Word Collective.

[dropcap]2[/dropcap]A brand new musical is about to escape the local dog parks for the local stage with Fugue Theatre’s Off Leash (Nov 4-8). The story of four disparate dog owners and their canine companions, the musical is double-cast with each performer playing both dog and owner.

Off Leash
Off Leash is not only a new musical about the politics that goes with owning a dog in a big city, but the loneliness and isolation that so many of us feel.

[dropcap]3[/dropcap]Something wicked this way comes… Standing Room Only Theatre gives us a new take on The Scottish Play with what they are calling a “violently contemporary and hyperkinetic version” of Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Nov 6-15).

Macbeth
Standing Room Only Shakespeare’s tragedy, complete with choreographed fights, special effects and some very explicit bewitchery.
