Our picks this week: The Jessies, Bloom II & The Human Ear

Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards (July 16)

Vancouver’s theatre community celebrates the best in professional theatre with the annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards. Our city’s equivalent to Broadway’s Tony Awards, this year’s Jessies, named for one of Vancouver’s theatre pioneers, moves under the Bard on the Beach tents at Vanier Park for an evening of acceptance speeches, musical numbers, and expletives. More at jessies.ca.

The Jessie awards recognize excellence in three groups: large and small theatre, plus theatre for young audiences.

Bloom II 2018 (July 17)

We love this pairing of dance, wine and comedy. As excerpts are performed by MascallDance’s choreographers-in-residence, audiences sip from a specially chosen glass of wine, while the dance is interpreted by a stand-up comedian.  More at mascalldance.ca.

The Human Ear (July 18-25)

How is this for an international melting pot? Ireland’s Untold Wants Theatre Co. brings Scottish-trained theatre-makers to Canada for the North American premiere of the British drama, The Human Ear, which made waves a couple years ago at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. More at untoldwants.com.
