In honour of the newly formed Granville Island Theatre District, our picks this week are a trio of shows taking place on the island itself. Two come to us from the next generation of theatre artists at Carousel Theatre & Arts Umbrella, and one from the professionals at the Arts Club Theatre Company.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Jul 27- Aug 11)

Forgoing the beach this summer, the students of Carousel Theatre’s Teen Shakespeare Program are busy getting ready for a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The culmination of their summer training, this Shakespearean comedy is performed on the Performance Works outdoor stage. More at carouseltheatre.ca.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Jul 25 – 28)

Also on Granville Island, a different set of students are learning the art of theatre as Summerstage at Arts Umbrella presents the Tony Award-winning musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.  More at artsumbrella.com.

Once (until Aug 5)

There is a reason this show has been extended by a week, as Once is definitely never enough in what our reviewer calls a “beautifully realized musical”, and a worthy farewell for the Arts Club Theatre Company’s Bill Millerd who is retiring after 45 years. More at artsclub.com.
