With January’s winter blues setting in, the best antidote to the end of the holidays, the unpredictable weather, and December credit card bill may very well be a dose of laughter.
The Vancouver TheatreSports League (VTSL) has got improv comedy fans covered at least with its annual Throwdown International TheatreSports Festival, set to play on Granville Island January 2-21.
Taking place at The Improv Centre, on Granville Island, Throwdown welcomes TheatreSports teams from around the world for head-to head matches.
“This year I concentrated on inviting the best teams from the US, as next year the entire TheatreSports world will be gathering in Vancouver for the 2019 International TheatreSports Institute Conference that VTSL is privileged to host,“ says artistic director Denise Jones.
The first half of Throwdown features four local teams playing in a classic TheatreSports round robin competition for bragging rights as to who is the best in Vancouver.
The second half will feature five US teams in a series of matches and showcases. The line-up consists of returning champions, SAK Comedy Lab from Orlando, along with Portland’s Curious Comedy Theater, Improv Boston from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Philadelphia’s The Future, and The Upfront Theatre from our neighbours in Bellingham, Washington.
On January 21, the winners of the international competitions play with the local victors from the previous week, in a winner-takes-all laugh fest.
“There’s nothing like a little healthy competition to bring out the best in improv comedy, and the winner gets bragging rights for a year plus an invitation to return next year to defend their crown,” says VTSL executive director, Jay Ono.
Throwdown International TheatreSports Festival plays The Improv Centre on Granville Island (1502 Duranleau St, Vancouver) January 2 – 21. Visit http://www.vtsl.com for tickets and information.
