Our picks this week: Topdog/Underdog, The Aliens & Merrily We Roll Along

Topdog/Underdog

The first of two shows currently on stage to recommend is Suzan-Lori Parks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning dark comedy Topdog/Underdog (until Feb 11), featuring outstanding performances from Michael Blake and Luc Roderique. Living paycheck-to-paycheck, the two brothers ultimately discover if sharing the same blood is really enough.

The Aliens

Over at the Havana Theatre, Sticks and Stones Theatre presents Annie Baker’s The Aliens (until Feb 4). What our reviewer Katie Gartlan-Close calls a potent play with an emotional punch, this story of three young white men and their existential crises may not be groundbreaking but it will leave you wanting more.

Merrily We Roll Along

At the Jericho Arts Centre, United Players presents Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along (until Feb 11). Beginning in the present and moving backwards through time, it features snapshots of a fictional Broadway composer’s life that helped shape him into the man he is today.
