Upintheair Theatre

Upintheair Theatre company will present its first e-Volver Festival on various digital platforms.

A live and digital performance series, e-Volver Festival was created in response to the isolation caused by current restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic and will replace the cancelled rEvolver Festival. All events are free and advance registration is required for some performances.

Premiering a series of nine performances—by local and national, emerging to mid-career solo performers and interdisciplinary companies—the series will expressly reflect on the time we are living in now. Exploring technology and non-traditional platforms for performing arts, the new creations will be viewed online with Discord, YouTube Live, Vimeo Live, Zoom, and streamed on Upintheair Theatre’s website.

Curated by rEvolver Festival staff – Davey Caldedron, Pippa Mackie, Daniel Martin, David Mott, and Kayleigh Sandomirsky – the presentation aims to provide an output for cutting-edge artists to experiment with new ways to collaborate, innovate, and tell timely stories.

In keeping with rEvolver’s curatorial aesthetic, the works run the spectrum of contemporary genres with dark comedy, dance, a DJ set, drag art, roleplay, video games, and a zombie film homage. Programmed under tight timelines, the festival has taken shape in the last six weeks and all shows are being created and rehearsed in the run-up to the festival, complying with social distancing measures.

Two outreach initiatives at the festival will include a digital archive project—in association with Rumble Theatre, Theatre Replacement, and SFU Special Collections—as well as an industry forum presented by Fascinator Management.
