The Red Priest

Trapped in a loveless and abusive marriage, a young unnamed woman is forced by her husband, a rich courtier of Louis XV, to take violin lessons from an aging and desperate Italian composer.  He is  Antonio Vivaldi, almost 20 years removed from ‘The Four Seasons’, who now earns money being a paid entertainer for the wealthy of Europe, staying at their homes, playing concerts of his Greatest Hits for their guests and composing personal pieces for his patrons.  His task? Within six weeks to get her into shape to play a concerto for the court in Paris in 1741.   And all for a bet!

The delicate, complex, and combative journey they embark on will not only decide their futures, but also change them both in ways they never imagined.   Finalist for the 2004 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. Winner of the 2005 CAA Carol Bolt Award.

The Red Priest runs at the Jericho Arts Centre (1675 Discovery) from Nov 13 – Dec 6, Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm, Sundays at 2pm.  It is also available for online viewing on those dates. All covid safety protocols are in place.
