Presentation House Theatre (PHT) proudly presents the live and live-streamed world premiere of Zoning Out, November 13 – 15, 2020.

Developed and produced by Blackout Theater Production while artists-in-residence at PHT, this new play explores immigration, Autism, and diversities that ultimately connect us as humans.

In Zoning Out, a single mother from Iran immigrates to Canada with her child. She faces challenges met by many newcomers in a new country, but her story takes an unexpected turn when she learns that her child is on the Autism spectrum.

The story is personal for members of the show’s creative team. Many immigrated to Canada and have lived experience of starting a new life in a new country and integrating into a new society. Some have close ties with community and family members on the Autism spectrum.

While developing the piece, the company realized there are similar experiences in immigration and Autism, such as isolation, challenges in communication, making social connections, and language barriers. These insights informed the direction of the play. Says Amir Hosseini, playwright, director, and co-founder of Blackout Theater, “Humanity is beyond languages and borders and norms.”

An Iranian playwright and director, Hosseini has written and directed in Vancouver’s Persian theatre scene for the past seven years. In addition to his theatre experiences, Hosseini wrote and directed several short films and documentaries in Iran, before immigrating to Canada.

When asked what he hopes audiences will take away from Zoning Out, Hosseini replies, “We hope that our audience can realize there is a beauty in being different.”

Zoning Out by Blackout Theater Production is performed in English. Live performances at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver Nov 13 – 15. Livestream option Nov 15.
