UBC Theatre and Film’s 2023/2024 season concludes with an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards on stage at the Frederic Wood Theatre from April 3–10.

This is an epic production that weaves together my passion for histories, songs, theatre, economics and the complexity of living in a deeply imperfect world. – Jacob Zimmer

Set in Chicago during the 1920s, the play follows Joan Dark, a compassionate soul who strives to do good; Mauler the Meat King, a ruthless businessman who wants out of the market; and a group of starving workers organizing for their rights.

A media release reads, “This brand-new adaptation connects Brecht to our current reality, urging us to examine our aspirations to do good and the missed opportunities for cooperation in difficult times.”

UBC MFA candidate Jacob Zimmer, who also directs the production, has undertaken this reimagining of Brecht’s drama. An accomplished theatremaker and dramaturge, Zimmer is the artistic director of Whitehorse’s Nakai Theatre and the founding director of Small Wooden Shoe.

Since January, Zimmer has been working with undergraduate BFA students to collaboratively devise text, music, and scenes, breathing life into the world of the Chicago stockyards.

“This is an epic production that weaves together my passion for histories, songs, theatre, economics and the complexity of living in a deeply imperfect world,” says Zimmer. “Working with the thirty-plus students to connect their experiences with mine and Brecht’s influence and relevance is perhaps the most ambitious thing I’ve made. I can’t wait for it to meet an audience.”

Saint Joan of the Stockyards plays at UBC’s Frederic Wood Theatre (6354 Crescent Rd, Vancouver) from April 3 to 10. For tickets and information, visit theatrefilm.ubc.ca.
