While films are the mainstay of the annual Vancouver International Film Festival, in its 42nd edition, it is expanding to include two cinema-infused live performances.

Curated by Norman Armour, co-founder of the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, who served as its artistic and executive director for 14 years before stepping down in 2018, Armour designed the events to “push the boundaries of traditional film programming.”

First up on October 1 at the Roundhouse Community Centre is Machine Folklore, an immersive audio-visual performance screening that asks, what does humanity look like to AI?

From Taiwan’s Software2050 and NAXS FUTURE, Machine Folklore uses a mix of music and moving images to “explore the future of digital culture, aesthetics, and the metaverse.”

Machine Folklore introduces Vancouver audiences and industry innovators to Taiwan’s vibrant, and deeply experimental, interdisciplinary arts scene.” – Norman Armour.

At the Vancouver Playhouse on October 5, filmmaker Sam Green presents 32 Sounds, an immersive documentary and sensory experience. This “live cinema” event, complete with individual headphones for each audience member, features in-person narration by Green with original music composed by JD Samson.

“Impeccably researched, the work takes metaphysical stock, as it were, of the nature of sound [with] its ability to profoundly shape our perceptions and sense of reality.” – Norman Armour
