Early Music Vancouver wants to help banish the winter blues

Early Music Vancouver is looking to help get music lovers over the seasonal doldrums with four live and digital concerts over the next five weeks.

Let’s face it, winter in Vancouver can be dreary, as the grey skies and seemingly endless rain can dampen the spirits of even the most positive people.

“Music stimulates our intellect, fosters our imagination and enhances [our] immune system,” Early Music Vancouver’s artistic director Suzie LeBlanc.

Early Music Vancouver (EMV) is looking to help get Vancouverites over the seasonal doldrums with four live and digital concerts over the next five weeks.

First up on January 20 is the digital version of The Odyssey of Kryštof Harant. This EMV concert was initially presented live last December in Vancouver with Ensemble Cappella Mariana from the Czech Republic, along with Montreal’s Constantinople and Vancouver’s own Bill Richardson as writer and narrator.

On February 3, just in time for Black History Month, the 2023 Grammy and Classical Music Award nominee countertenor Reginald Mobley returns to Vancouver to perform with Alexander Weimann and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra in Raise, Raise the Voice. This live concert includes works by Purcell, Bach and Duke Ellington that are bookended by Purcell’s O Solitude and Ellington’s In My Solitude.

Then, EMV celebrates Valentine’s Day on February 14 with Concerto d’Amore, a digital version of a concert first performed live by the Pacific Baroque Orchestra last year. As the concert title suggests, the programme is all about love featuring works by Baroque masters such as Handel, Telemann and Bononcini.

The next live concert, on February 17, is with England’s Consone Quartet, attracting a lot of attention in the music world for their interpretations of classical and romantic repertoire. The evening’s programme includes works by Mozart, Haydn, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and Fanny Mendelssohn.
