Before The Curtain Goes Up: Raven

The Cultch presents Raven at the York Theatre on April 26-30 as part of the 2023 Femme Festival.

Based on their experiences as artists and mothers, the performers of the Berlin-based collective still hungry examine the stigma surrounding the German concept of “Rabenmutter” (raven mother—a selfish, neglectful mother) in Raven.

Playing on the York Theatre stage from April 26-30 as part of the 2023 Femme Festival, this contemporary circus act features acrobats Romy Seibt, Anke van Engelshoven, and Lena Ries.

One moment, the performers lovingly mother their children like hens, and the rhythms of their daily movements turn into skilful satirical choreographies. The next moment, memories of their strength as successful artists transform them into soaring eagles. With disarming directness—and the fearlessness of circus moms—the performers invite us to question our preconceived notions of working mothers, women, and circus performers.

In this edition of Before The Curtain Goes Up, Vancouver Presents contributor David C Jones speaks with the trio of performers in Raven to learn more.

Raven plays as part of The Cultch’s 2023 Femme Festival at the York Theatre (639 Commercial Dr, Vancouver) from April 26-30. Visit thecultch.com for tickets and information.
