Before The Curtain Goes Up: That Was Then

That Was Then runs at The Nest on Granville Island from January 19 – 21, 2024.

Award-winning Vancouver-based songwriter Kate MacColl presents her new musical That Was Then at The Nest on Granville Island from January 19-21.

Bring your tissues because That Was Then is essentially a chick flick for the stage. – Kate MacColl

A standalone sequel to her 2018 musical This is Now, her new musical is the story of friends Emily and Sarah who are going through significant changes in their lives.

Sarah is feverishly trying to meet the deadline for her master’s thesis when her marriage hits the rocks. Emotions are running high, adding considerable strain to the already volatile relationship between her and her daughter, Anne, who has just completed university and is working out what she wants her life as a young adult to look like. On the same weekend, Emily’s estranged mother unexpectedly makes contact, forcing her to consider reconciliation and forgiveness. Emily and Sarah have each other to lean on, but is their friendship strong enough to withstand these pressures?

In this edition of Before The Curtain Goes Up, Vancouver Presents contributor David C. Jones chats with MacColl to learn more.

That Was Then runs at The Nest on Granville Island (3rd Floor, 1398 Cartwright St, Vancouver) from January 19 – 21, 2024. Visit katemaccoll.com for tickets and information.
