In a media release, Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group announced Vancouverite Eva Tavares has taken over the role of Christine Daaé in the North America tour of The Phantom of the Opera.
Tavares, originally set to play the role as the production moved next to Edmonton, took over from Katie Travis at Thursday’s performance in Vancouver. Tavares will perform in the role as the production continues on its tour. No reason was given for the early departure of Travis.
Hailing from Vancouver, Tavares received some of her training at the UBC Opera program, as well as the Banff/Citadel Theatre professional theatre program.
Tavares’s previous credits include the world premiere of Garth Drabinsky’s Sousatzka, West Side Story and A Little Night Music. Tavares was also the choreographer for the 2015 Vancouver Opera production of Die Fledermaus.
