Theatre geeks and frat boys join forces in new musical

Rushed Productions presents Sigma Acapella at Arts Umbrella's Jack and Darlene Poole Theatre from March 18 through March 29.

Vancouver’s Rushed Productions will present the premiere of Annahis Basmadjian’s Sigma Acapella, a brand-new musical that “revisits the true, wholesome meaning of ‘boys being boys’ and the endearingly unhinged quality of theatre kids.”

Written and produced by Basmadjian and composed by Sebastian Ochoa Mendoza, Sigma Acapella is the story of a non-descript University’s development plans to destroy all “degenerate” and “unnecessary” clubs and societies. To save their home, one frat star and his house of frat boy outcasts must team up with a theatre dad and his underdog squad of the theatre department to save their home and, maybe, experience a little culture and romance along the way.

“One of the purposes of the performing arts is to act as an emotional bridge, a lens through which the audience can look into another’s life, another’s story, and understand the world a little better. And that’s great, that’s good and fine, but sometimes you just want to have a good time,” says Basmadjian.

Sigma Acapella is Basmadjian’s second full-length musical, which began with Albireo in 2018. Now, after recovering from being struck by an F150 truck, relearning how to walk while attaining her master’s degree, and maneuvering the pandemic, Basmadjian and Rushed present Sigma Acapella.

Rushed Productions presents Sigma Acapella at Arts Umbrella’s Jack and Darlene Poole Theatre (1400 Johnston Street, Granville Island) from March 18 through March 29. Visit ticketowl.io for tickets and information.
