Sex, shame, transformation (and synchronized swimming)

Live at Studio 58 with the company of Mortified

Studio 58, the professional theatre school at Vancouver’s Langara College, continues its season with Amy Rutherford’s Mortified.

Presented in association with Touchstone Theatre, this world premiere play tells the story of a woman runs into a man from her past and is surprised by the power he still holds over her. In an attempt to uncover the truth of what happened between them, she recalls her adolescent self: a 14-year-old synchronized swimmer, struggling to make sense of the world around her.

“It’s about sex, shame, and transformation,” says playwright Amy Rutherford. “It is the story of a teenage girl’s first experiences in love, and how they shape her. And they are synchronized swimmers.”

Vancouver Presents contributing editor Mark Robins went into the rehearsal room with Rutherford, director Anita Rochon, and members of the company of Mortified to find out more.

Mortified plays Studio 58 at Lanagara College (100 West 49th Ave, Vancouver) November 15 through December 2. Tickets are available online at Tickets Tonight. or visit studio58.ca for more information.
